Gianfranco Zaccai is an Industrial designer who is constantly on a quest to discover the next big idea. His methodology is to actually put himself in place of the patient. The desire is to get a feel for what they feel, how they feel it and why. The line of work he is in defines why he and his staff must pretend to be many different things.

Mr. Zaccai has been examining health care in greater precision and focus. He has laid in a hospital bed for a good time to get a feel for what the patients felt in that environment. These studies in accordance with surveys from older generations and their experiences in healthcare are constantly being analyzed to produce trends and eventually improve the experience of the patient to its most full potential. His work and achievements along with Continuum have produced the award winning Compass Modular System.

Once again Herman Miller is recognized for their efforts in the Health industry.

The 2011 Medical Design Excellence Awards (MDEA) ceremony is where they received a Gold Award in the category of General Hospital Devices and Therapeutic Products. The second award was presented to Herman Miller at the 2011 International Design Excellence Awards (IDEA) were they received a Silver IDEA award in the category of Medical & Scientific Products.

“At Herman Miller Healthcare, we believe recognition from prestigious awards programs reaffirms we are on track with our product development process.  Our process includes years of meticulous and thoughtful R&D to discover unrealized patient – and family and caregiver – needs,” said Herman Miller Healthcare President Beth Nickels. “In the end, knowing patients, caregivers and families can be a little more comfortable during traumatic and often stressful situations is our real prize, and one Herman Miller Healthcare will strive to win year after year with innovative designs for adaptive healthcare spaces.”

The Compass system is designed to respond to the constant changes of healthcare methods. Herman Miller and Continuum collaborated in the creation of this furnishing solution along with information collected from observations of over 550 people within the field of healthcare.

NeoCon 2011 has come and gone as Herman Miller and Nemschoff earned the Gold this year for their Oaisis Overbed Table.  NeoCon is an event designed to inspire new and innovative commercial interior product design and development. Many companies present their ideas in their showrooms in hopes that they have the next great product that takes the industry by surprise. There are 42 categories these products fall into such as Healthcare, Education, Commercial, etc. 50 judges evaluate the products before the show opens to the public.

Herman Miller and Nemschoff collaborated for the creation of the Oasis Overbed Table. It’s space-saving design and ease of utilization creates a more relaxed environment for patients as well as the caregivers themselves. These characteristics helped them win the Gold Award. “In partnership with Nemschoff, Herman Miller Healthcare has advanced care capabilities within healing environments,” said Herman Miller Healthcare President Beth Nickels. “Receiving this award proves our ability to provide significant solutions for the healthcare industry.” The showroom displays other creative pieces as Herman Miller and Nemschoff have over 40 years of experience dealing with Healthcare environments.
