When NuWeld, Inc. moved from their 14,000 square-foot facility in Trout Run, PA, to a 211,000 square-foot building in nearby Williamsport, their first phone call was not to SupplySource for furnishings. It was to a company that sells golf carts, from which they bought two, to travel from one end of the quarter-mile-long facility to the other without taking all day!But the call to SupplySource soon followed. The engineering and fabrication company faced a daunting task: furnishing offices, shared workspace, and conference space to support a quickly-expanding workforce.

In the prior 14 years, NuWeld was Tim Satterfield’s side business. His wife, Marilyn, now NuWeld Executive Vice President and co-owner says, “We were raising four teenagers, and I said to him, ‘Gee, you have such talent. Can you do something on the side to make a few extra bucks?’ ” A welder by trade, and at the time the welding manager for the former Anchor Darling Valve Company, Tim started tinkering in his garage.

Soon the sheer number of contracts forced a business decision moving the Satterfields to make the garage-based business a full-time enterprise. NuWeld moved its operations to a building in Trout Run. By 2011, they were bursting out of their Trout Run facility, having found a niche with the region’s oil and gas industry, providing turn-key engineering, project management, shop fabrication, and on-site well heal construction and installation.

During the last six months of 2011, the company had doubled its workforce from 119 to 275 employees. To accommodate their rapid growth, the company moved into an empty, dirty, unheated office space on Reach Road in Williamsport.

A Call Based on History and Necessity

The call to SupplySource and Kathy Brown, their sales representative, was not a shot in the dark. “I’ve worked with SupplySource for many years,” says Satterfield. “When we expanded in Trout Run, we contacted SupplySource. They’re close, they have furniture on display, and they offer used furniture, which, at that point, was very much in our budget. We wanted nice, executive-looking furniture without spending a lot.”

As a local company that has hired the bulk of their workforce from the local area, NuWeld had some stipulations. They requested mostly American-made furniture. The furniture needed to be professional-looking, yet durable; the field supervisors and project managers track in a fair amount of dirt on the soles of their work boots. The furniture had to be affordable and accommodate technology.

A tour through the maze-like office building, now refreshed with paint and new flooring, reveals clusters of workstations for the engineers, CAD designers, and drafters, and well-furnished offices for Quality Assurance, Accounting, Human Resources, Reception, and other conference and meeting rooms. “We needed a lot of bookshelves, desks, chairs, and work tables,” says Satterfield, who acknowledges that their company’s success and rapid growth boggle her mind a little.

Two large spaces still loom empty. “We’re continuing to work with SupplySource to furnish a state-of-the-art conference room, more private offices, and a training room that will accommodate about 35 people,” explains Satterfield. The training room will be multi-functional, with computers, conference-type tables, and stackable seating.

Satterfield says she didn’t hesitate to call SupplySource because of her familiarity with their quality and responsiveness. “Some of SupplySource’s best qualities are their promptness and knowledge,” she says. “Being able to, in their minds, see what we’re trying to see or figure out, it’s nice that they’ve already got it in their heads.”

On October 11, 2011, Barnabus Noel made us aware that he was retiring.

Barnabus has been with SupplySource for 11 years; he came with the acquisition of the Office Interiors dealership in 2000. Barnabus had proven himself to be a reliable, conscientious leader on our Camp Hill installation crew. Without a doubt our customers loved “Mr. B.” Barnabus was one of those employees that customers felt compelled to email his supervisor or the sales person about expressing his willingness to go above and beyond in providing customer service for them.

Barnabus did not give us much time to have an occasion in his honor, so the Camp Hill crew had a morning breakfast for him. Ray and I traveled to Camp Hill to take him out to lunch on his last day. While at lunch, Barnabus shared much about his youth and his life on the island (Grenada) where he grew up. We asked him what he wanted to do now that he was retired and he said, “He would like to travel home to see his ailing mother.” At which time we offered, as a retirement gift, to pay for his trip home.

So hopefully by the time you are reading this, Barnabus is in Grenada visiting his mother and enjoying his family, as well as the beginning of his well-deserved retirement.

Sid and Carlene recently had the honor of participating in a Human Resource Management interviewing seminar at Lock Haven University. Sid participated in a mock interview with the professor where they demonstrated what not to do or say. The students then split up into five groups. Each business associate shared with them things we look for when interviewing, questions we can and cannot ask, and action words that stand out to us on resumes.

Dr. Marcia J. Kurzynski, Assistant Professor, said, “It is a real benefit for the students to hear a business professional’s perspective on job interviewing and requisite skills. All of the students in the class gained a better understanding that what they are learning in class and through the textbook is real, but not completely authoritative or final in any way – there is always something more (personal qualities and character) that they must bring to the table. Of the responses submitted so far, each had something very positive to say (see one of the responses below.)

“The fact I found most interesting was that Miss Geyer said your interview begins the minute you walk in the door and does not begin when you’re seated and the formal interview has begun. Due to the smallness of her company, she may ask other employees about you, such as the receptionist or others that interacted with you while you were in the building.” – Austin Cassell, Lock Haven University student.

In addition, Sid continues to participate in the Partner Ed program working with groups of juniors and seniors taking Business Management courses. This will be his third year in the program.

Thank you Camp Hill installation crew, Barnabas Noel, Keith Seace, Gary Wenger, Dave Pross, Charles Reynolds, and Drexel temps Mike and Jason for a job well done.

Without your hard work and dedication, we would not have been able to install the 460 chairs and 89 tables in the Mund Hall at Lebanon Valley College on time.

With the product shipping two days late, we weren’t sure it was going to ship at all, and arriving Saturday morning, our deadline of Monday morning did not change. We were short-shipped 26 table bases so we scrambled to get rental tables for the students to use at meal times.

Sunday, after the crew was finished, our contact came to us and asked, “If you have any magic left, can you have the remainder of the tables installed before Friday because we have a special breakfast that morning?” To make this happen the Thursday before we had to squeeze the schedule and work around the college’s meal times. In the end, the customer was elated to have all of the new product for the special breakfast.

by Jennifer Peck

The Millennium Science Complex is going through its final touches at Penn State after nearly three years of construction. The 297,000 square foot building will serve as the new home for Penn State’s Huck Institutes of the Life Sciences and Materials Research Institute. The building will hold approximately 300 researchers and staff; it is the most comprehensive research facility and largest academic building on campus. Designed to be free from vibration and electromagnetic forces that disturb sensitive equipment, quiet labs are isolated by their location, extra-thick concrete slabs, double walls and aluminum plating around floors, walls and ceilings, among other means. Designed by the internationally known architect Rafael Vinoly, the Millennium Science Complex’s most visually, notable architectural feature is a large cantilever joining the life sciences and material sciences wings. Beneath the cantilever is a plaza and garden that doubles as a green roof for the lab space below. The cantilever includes an opening in the roof to allow sun to reach the garden plaza beneath. Green roofs will reduce storm water runoff, enhance energy efficiency, and aid in achieving LEED® certification.

All faculty offices were outfitted with Geiger Levels while the conference rooms all consist of Geiger Caucus Tables. The student and open lab spaces are made up of Herman Miller’s Canvas product. The Canvas product spans throughout the entire building and consists of wall-based, beam-based, and free-standing product. All filing in the building consists of either Geiger (in the faculty offices) or Herman Miller’s Tu filing and storage in the more general areas. Benches from Hightower occupy the massive lobbies in both the Material and Life Science entrances.

Faculty and staff are already making themselves at home in their new state-of-the-art space, and a grand opening is set for the spring.

Changing trends in technology usage have enabled computer users to become more demanding. This need for speed has created a very short attention span within computer users. We have a tendency to save many things to the desktop and allow it to get cluttered. This becomes a very distracting environment when attempting to get work done.

Therefore, for the sake of efficiency and productivity, organize and empty the desktop of the computer. If you are at home, try creating a new user. The cleaned up desktop will help to keep a solid focus on the tasks at hand and prevent possible distraction. Not only should we clear the desktop of the computer, we should clear the work surface or desktop that the computer and or monitor rests on. Only keep the necessary items such as the computer peripherals, office supplies and a few personal items like photos. Allowing for clutter of folders, binders, papers, etc. creates an overwhelming and distraction filled environment. Again, clearing each desktop will help to keep a solid focus on tasks without the possibility of distraction.
